Vitamin B12 supplementation to flour protects new born babies from birth defects and eldery people from anemia
The Scientific Advisory Committee for Nutrition in United Kingdom has asked the Government to fortified flour with folic acid/Vitamin B12.
Folic acid acts as an important nutritional supplement for new born babies and pregnant women has it protects newborn babies from birth defects. Folic acid is also very useful in old age people as they are prone to B12 deficiency leading to anemia and neurological abnormalities. Folic acid helps to increase blood cells in old people preventing anemia.Supplementation of folic acid in flour at a concentration of 240 mcg for every 100g of flour helps in reducing birth defects such as neural tube defects in new born babies a report from Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy (FOPA) reports.
