UP Docs Collected Pay Without Work

More than 400 doctors of Uttar Pradesh's Provincial Medical Services (PMS) were involved in the Rs 150 crore fraud that saw them collect pay for more than 14 years

More than 400 doctors of Uttar Pradesh's Provincial Medical Services (PMS) were involved in the Rs 150 crore fraud that saw them collect pay for more than 14 years without attending any work.

The Uttar Pradesh government had tried to tackle the shortage of medical staff by appointing more than 3,000 doctors to look after more than 3,500 public health centers and nearly 400 community health centers.

However after attending to their work for a short time and gaining experience, more than a 1,000 doctors stopped coming to work, either starting their own practice or joining private hospitals but continued to draw salaries and other associated perks from the government.

Though the matter was brought to notice back in 2005, the doctors continued to draw their salaries after getting clearances from their superiors. The current state administration has acted on the report by cutting the names of 1,052 who were either dead or retired.
