The Queen’s recent speech lit up many faces, especially the mentally-ill patients and their caregivers. The speech revived hope about positive changes to the Mental Health Act 1983, which would permit the use of obligatory powers to enable quality treatment to the afflicted. This would also obliterate the present ‘treatability test’.

The infamous ‘Bournewood gap’ is also slated to meet its end as per the indication of the new bill, which will seek to improve the lot of the underprivileged in the society. The Queen also gave a peek into other changes in store – bill to curb antisocial trends, revamp of the probation service, and enabling certain privileges to the old and disabled.
