A US Marine Captain has pointed a finger at the dressing style of Australian women, saying that they are too skimpily clad to attract "nice men".

After a night out on Mitchell St. in Darwin, Capt John Campbell said the city's women wear clothes that leave nothing to the imagination, The Northern Territory News reports.

"It's about having standards, ladies," News.com.au quoted him as saying.

"What are standards? Well, it can begin by dressing in a manner that leaves something to the imagination, to say the least," he added.

The captain's letter to the editor was published in the Northern Territory News, and ended up raising eyebrows among many Darwin women.

However, Campbell said: "Ladies have been conned into thinking that just because you have it means you should flaunt it."

"Come on ladies, don't send us mixed messages. That's what you do every time you dress with less than nothing on," he wrote.
