US Philanthropist Messenger for Malaria

In an attempt to give malaria a higher international profile, UN chief Ban Ki-moon announced the appointment of US philanthropist Ray Chambers as his special envoy for the disease.

Chambers will help Ban "raise the issue of malaria on the international political and development agendas including by doing all in his power to reduce child deaths from the disease," a UN statement said.

"Malaria kills an African child every 30 seconds and affects all regions of the world, yet it does not enjoy the high profile visibility of other issues of similar scale and impact, it added.

The disease, one of the deadliest diseases in Africa and in developing countries, kills more than one million people each year, most of them children.
