Doctors however advice caution against using the emergency contraceptive pill regularly as it could throw open a Pandora’s Box of health problems.

The latest emergency contraception pill is undoubtedly a boon to avoid unwanted pregnancies and check the growth of population.

Doctors however advice caution against using the pill regularly as it could throw open a Pandora’s Box of health problems. Weight gain and menstruation irregularities figure as a common problem among regular users though it may not affect fertility adversely.

Gynecologists and obstetricians are wary of progestin, a key component of the emergency pill which causes the body to retain excess water. Additionally, it promotes weight gain as the pill causes the deposit of fat in the body. Further, using the pill on a regular basis can cause abnormalities in the menstrual cycle leading to irregular bleeding or long menstrual cycles.

Though the pill may not have serious side effects, yet it may be advisable to use the pill only during an emergency, doctors said.
