A new study says that uterine cancer is more lethal for black women. The study published in the journal Cancer found that black women with uterine cancer survived for 10.2 months as compared to 12.2 months in white women given the same treatment.
Dr. G. Larry Maxwell and his colleagues at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C said black women were 26 percent more likely to die than white women. "When response to treatment was analyzed, blacks appeared to have lower tumor response to each of the chemotherapy regimens employed in the trials," the researchers wrote.The researchers examined clinical data from 1,151 patients attending various trials. They found that black women came in very late for diagnosis when the disease had already progressed considerably. "While the causes of this survival difference remain to be elucidated, socioeconomic, biologic and cultural etiologies may be involved," they wrote.
