Chennai: Vasan Eye Care Hospitals, one of the largest eye care hospital networks in southern India, has set up its first branch here, with seven more in the offing.
The Chennai facility has been set up in collaboration with K. Premraj, a prominent ophthalmic surgeon and managing director of Prems' Eye Clinic. The first facility would have 70 specialists. The Vasan Eye Care Group has earmarked a Rs.450 million investment for the eight hospitals. Fifty percent of the funds will be generated through internal accruals and the balance will be made up of debt and other equity options.
"Today there are standalone centres offering good eye care in many cities. However, a large number of people look for reliable eye care in their neighbourhood itself and end up going to small clinics, where they are not sure about the quality," explained A.M. Arun, Vasan Group's chairperson.
The Vasan chain includes nine state-of-the-art facilities in Trichirapally, Salem, Erode, Cochin, Trivandrum, Calicut, Kottayam, Kannur and Hubli.
The group plans to expand to New Delhi, Mumbai and Koltata soon and emerge as the largest eye care provider in the country by 2010 with 50 centres, Arun said.
