The recent Victorian Alcohol Statistics has revealed the increasing toll of alcohol consumption, causing a 50% increase in alcohol associated assaults and hospital admissions between 1999 and 2007. Though, there were no changes in the statistics of alcohol related deaths and road injuries, statistics showed a 55% increase in the numbers seeking alcohol rehabilitation.
State Mental Health and Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge said , “This is the most comprehensive, detailed analysis of the impact of alcohol across the state, it’s critical for developing solutions."
In her opinion, stepping up the presence of police on the streets, enforcing stricter liquor licensing laws, as well as keeping a check on supply of alcohol to minors, may be some of the immediate actionable points the government should consider.
