European Union lawmakers decided on Tuesday that food companies will not be allowed to make tall claims on their products any longer. The decision marks the first time that EU lawmakers have clamped down on misleading claims or health benefits on the food labels.
EU is also looking to set a common standard for vitamins, minerals and food additives. There will not be any banks on foodstuff, but manufacturers who are not able to justify their claims will have to repackage their products.Companies will not be allowed to make any nutrition claims on alcoholic products unless it is related to a reduction in alcohol or calories. Scientifically proven claims can still be displayed on the labels. The new rules also lay down the maximum requirements of vitamins and minerals in food.
EU member countries have until the end of summer to give their nod to these new rules.
