Stem cell research- now Nobel Laureates join the debate

Throwing their lot with the group of scientists asking for more funding into stem cell research, 80 Nobel prize winners are faxing a letter to U.S. President George W. Bush asking him not to block stem cell research in any way. The debate on stem cell research is reaching a feverish pitch with both sides slamming each other on the pros and cons of stem cell research. While those who oppose it call the research as immoral, those supporting it call it immoral if the study is stopped now.

The bush administration is now in a sticky situation, as it has to decide carefully on this ethical issue, which has infuriated many in the United States. Leaving the ethical part aside, a group of 80 high profile scientists including amongst other luminaries like James Watson and Hamilton O. Smith.

The opponents are quick to rubbish the claims of the scientists. In a hard-hitting statement, Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee criticized the scientists and said.
