Kolkata's B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre Friday became the first in the country to win a new government accreditation in recognition of its high quality patient care.

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Service Providers (NABH) certification "is an endorsement of our focus on quality", Suyash Borar, the hospital's chief operating officer, told IANS.

"The NABH tag will be a tool to win over patients from the US, Europe and other foreign countries."

The 160-bedded super speciality hospital, which conducts over 850 critical heart surgeries per year, was awarded the certification by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

NABH is a quality and safety certificate given by the Quality Council of India under the ministry of commerce after evaluating all aspects, including patient care, patient rights, disaster management, staff safety, success rate and hospital inspection control.

"We will continue to work hard to provide world-class treatment to our patients and maintain the highest standards in heart care," Borar said.
