Study finds Bisphenol A present in plastics used in food containers responsible for damage to development of neurons in brain
Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the manufacture of plastics used in food industry. BPA present in the plastics as a tendency to become highly unstable due to break in its chemical linkage and integrates with the food in the container causing damage to human health. BPA is found to be an artificial estrogen which may lead to breast cancer and developmental problems. Estrogens is a female sex hormone which is also important for cell growth and brain development.
This artificial estrogens mimic the action of natural estrogen and inhibits the action of natural estrogens which is required for the development of neurons which leads to inactivity in the specific subsets of neurons which are required for the survival of maturing neurons in the brain region causing disruption of normal function of the adult brain.Professor Scott Belcher and his team from University of Cincinnati are responsible for studying the harmful effects of BPA present in plastics of packed foods which has been published in the Journal, Endocrinology.
