Village ‘doctor’ Bill in West Bengal Assembly

Health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra has brought forward a legislation that will allow “rural health practitioners” with a three-year diploma to practice in villages.

The Left Front and the Opposition wanted to defer the bill, but Mishra has managed to bring the West Bengal Health Regulatory Authority Bill in front of the Assembly.

CPM state secretary and front chairman Biman Bose contended that the bill had not been discussed by his party. “The front wants the bill referred to the Assembly select committee to evolve a collective opinion. However, the House has to decide its business,” he said.

Trinamul leader Partha Chatterjee and the Congress’s Manas Bhuniya said the bill would put the lives of villagers in danger.
