Studies have shown that osteoporosis which occurs in people above the age of 50 yrs may be benefited from taking supplements of vitamin D.
Patients who are suffering from increased bone fracture and rapid porous ness of bones may benefit greatly from taking Vitamin D, says a study in Journal of the American Medical Directors Association. The researchers are of the opinion that nutritional supplements of the vitamin D along with calcium may be associated with a reduction in fractures due to fall in elderly people.Although vitamin D is an important ingredient of a balanced diet, the dietary intake of this vitamin had remained low in many countries. While this had lead to some of the countries going for dietary fortification of vitamin d especially in foods like wheat, milk and margarine, one global review says that on an average diets only supply about 6% to 47% of the recommended dietary allowance.
Thus for the elderly people who are more at risk from osteoporosis will be required to take additional supplements of vitamin D to increase the bone density that will hamper the growth of the condition.
