Vitamins B-12 and Folic acid supplements have been identified as having a possible role in alleviating heart disease. They are believed to do so by reducing the level of an amino acid called Homocysteine, which has been implicated as the culprit, increasing clot formation in blood vessels.
Ongoing research is however to confirm the claim. Scientists remain skeptical about the superior benefits of these vitamin supplements over a healthy diet, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fish. In the opinion of the American Heart Association, “Vitamin supplements should not be encouraged until they are proven beneficial.”Food sources of folic acid are citrus fruits, tomatoes, vegetables, whole grain and fortified grain products, beans and lentils. Major sources of B-12 include meat, poultry, fish and dairy products.
A healthy lifestyle and a wholesome diet complemented by the above may be in order, though!
