Psychwatch New Zealand, the brain child of a counselor from Auckland, is a website launched to bring to notice all those ‘prodigal’ mental health providers and staff who flout ethics and codes of conduct laid down by the Health and Disability Commissioner.
The counselor is categorical about his intention to put up the names of all those mental health workers who breach the code of conduct.Dismissing worries that his website may negatively impact the quality of care, counselor and mediator Steve Taylor assured that the site was born with the motive of instilling responsibility and accountability among health providers and caregivers, especially to reduce incompetence in the mental health service.
However, the mental health workers union is not happy with these developments. Public Service Association secretary Warwick Jones echoed his displeasure and found this endeavor similar to another website which targeted social workers.
According to Jones, such an exercise does not do much to improve the quality of care. Infact it becomes difficult for individuals to contribute effectively towards mental health, when they would be wary of any action which could put them in bad light.
The Health and Disability Commissioner is unhappy with this website, especially at a time when it is difficult to find, train and retain mental health workers.
