Condoms or abortion, Vatican seems determined in its opposition, whatever the rest of the world might say. Now the Pope is said to be blocking the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador.

Condoms or abortion, Vatican seems determined in its opposition, whatever the rest of the world might say. Now the Pope is said to be blocking the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador, according to reports

Vatican sources hinted to an Italian newspaper anyone favouring abortion was disqualified to be an ambassador to the papal enclave.

Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late US President John F Kennedy, an icon for generations, had supported Obama’s election campaign.

She was even poised to replace Hillary Clinton as New York senator, but she had to drop out amid criticism that she lacked enough experience for the job, Telegraph reported.

Still wanting to do something to reward her for her endorsement of his candidature, President Obama then proposed her as the country’s ambassador to Vatican, but this time her strong anti-abortion stance could be dashing her hopes.

Indeed Vatican has also strongly disapproved of Mr Obama's support for abortion and stem cell research. But if the priests can’t topple him, at the very least they can block Caroline Kennedy’ appointment.

Ms Kennedy, 53, has said that she supports abortion. Raymond Flynn, a former US ambassador to the Vatican, said earlier this week that Ms Kennedy would be a poor choice.

"It's imperative, it's essential that the person who represents us to the Holy See be a person who has pro-life values. I hope the President doesn't make that mistake," he told the Boston Herald. "She said she was pro-choice. I don't assume she's going to change that, which is problematic."

The White House refused to comment.
