What’s make-up got to do with perception of competence in the work place? A lot says a recent Harvard study, which explains that grooming which includes wearing professional attire and more make-up gives women confidence which influences how they are perceived at work. A study which showed images of 25 women with different levels of make-up to more than 250 people found that women whose make-up was noticeable were perceived as more competent.
Obviously, make-up enhances women’s appearance and this boosts their confidence levels making them appear more competent than the less made-up lot.
Critics feel that ‘competence’ speaks for itself in the long run, irrespective of make-up or no make-up. While make-up can create a first impact and help boost confidence levels, it is wrong to make assumptions about women’s competence at work based on their make-up alone.
