These days it is a very common site to see middle aged people esp. women walk in an awkward manner due to the degenerative disease of arthritis. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of joint cartilage. It commonly affects the hands, feet and weight-bearing joints including the knee.

A long-term research study conducted by Wake Forest University, North Carolina (USA) proclaims that subjects suffering from OA showed that an average weight reduction of 5 percent in overweight and obese older patients brought an 18 percent gain in overall function. Three kinds of groups were formed based on a regime of diet only, exercise only or a combination of healthy habits.

The abstract written on the above study, states that for every one pound of weight loss, there is a 4-pound reduction in the load exerted on the knee with each step. Considering this addition of the effects on thousands of steps we take each day it is a significant difference. This way the load on knees is drastically reduced and OA pain can be relieved.

Therefore this weighty problem has a weight loss solution and has been proved to be highly beneficial for OA patients.
