"If we had a period of sustained hot weather, and there is nothing to say that we won't have a period of hot weather that could be worse than in 2003, we could see a similar number of mortalities," said Patrick Sachon, health service development manager at the Met Office. This summer the Met has forecasted high temperatures leading people to believe that the summer of 2003 could very well be repeated when 2,000 people died from heat stroke as temperatures hit 38C (100F).
The new heatwave plan also suggests that people vulnerable to heat avoid going into the sun between 11am and 3pm. Homeowners are asked to plant more trees for natural shade and are also advised to paint their homes white, which could cost them an additional £3,750.
