A wife who suspected her hubby of luring teenagers into sex posed as a schoolgirl online to catch him red handed, a court was told.

Cheryl Roberts, 61, set up a computer in the living room of their house to catch her husband David, 68, while he accessed the net from the study and sex chatted with young girls.

When David asked the "girl" to have sex with him, Cheryl was so shocked that she called in the police, the court heard.

Cheryl began suspecting her husband when he started spending more and more time in his study and then one day she saw a message pop up on their computer while David was not at home.

"She realised the message on the screen was one her husband had posted to a young girl," the Telegraph quoted Martyn Kelly, prosecuting, as telling the court.

He added: "She could see the chatroom he was using and decided to catch him out by creating a profile of her own to use the same internet site.

"Her husband had no idea but soon he was chatting with his own wife, believing it was a 14-year-old girl.

"She had decided to pose as a schoolgirl to confirm her fears."

David was using a webcam to perform indecent acts and his wife could see all of it. She was so dismayed by the whole episode that she straightaway called in the NSPCC and the police.

The police found numerous child porn images on David's computer and he thought he was caught while downloading them, until the cops told him that it was his wife who had given up on him.

While questioning David said he had not had intercourse with any schoolgirl but was "prepared to do so".

In an earlier hearing he had confessed to having engaged in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

The court forbid David to have access to children under 18, in person or online and ordered him to perform community service for three years.

He was also asked to register as a sex offender for five years.

David and Cheryl, who have been married for 18 years are now getting divorced, the court heard.

Cheryl said: "I was shocked at the sentence - I don't think he's got what he deserves. I thought the judge would be a lot harder and that he might go to prison.

"I still feel very angry towards him. It is hard to think that a man you married could do this."

She added: "But I did the right thing and I don't regret it. Now I just need some time to think and put all this behind me."
