Researchers from Canada, United States and Europe are registering men with advanced prostate cancer for a study involving a treatment that combines chemotherapy with high-dose of Calcitriol, a naturally occurring active form of vitamin D.
This clinical trial will test whether specially formulated high-dose vitamin D, taken in combination with a chemotherapy drug called Docetaxel, increases survival time and improves quality of life in men with advanced prostate cancer. Presently there is no effective treatment for patients who have stopped responding to hormone therapy.The trial is designed to involve 1000 men who will be under the observation of Dr. Kim Chi of the B.C. Cancer Agency and two other lead investigators..
This treatment delivers much higher doses of vitamin D than a person can possibly get through diet or supplements, and does not create any toxic side effects usually caused while taking high-dose of vitamins.
'We hope the treatment will prolong survival and improve quality of life for men with advanced prostate cancer,' said Dr.Chi.
'The preliminary trials involving the treatment look promising.'
