Woman Returning from Asian Holiday Finds 3-Inch Leech in Her Nose

A 24-year old Scottish woman who came back from her holiday in Asia found that what she thought was congealed blood up her nose was instead a 3-inch leech. Daniela Liverani had been traveling through south east Asia and when she returned back to her home, she suffered from persistent nosebleeds. Ms Liverani had been involved in a motorbike accident while on holiday and assumed that she may have burst a blood vessel which was causing the nosebleeds.

Days later she found a dark patch in her nostril and thought it to be congealed blood but when it came out as far as her bottom lip, she came to know that it was some sort of animal instead and rushed to the Emergency at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary where the hospital staff took around 30 minutes to pull the leech out.

“It was agony - whenever the doctor grabbed him, I could feel the leech tugging at the inside of my nose. Then all of a sudden, after half an hour, the pain stopped and the doctor had the leech in the tweezers. He was about as long as my forefinger and as fat as my thumb”, she said.
