Women Drink More in Middle Age

A new study conducted by the British Liver Trust has revealed that women drink more when they reach middle age with more than 20 percent admitting to binge drinking.

The British Liver Trust teamed up with Prima magazine and conducted a survey among 2,000 of the magazine readers. The survey found that while wine was the preferred drink of most women, more than 70 percent were not sure how many units of alcohol each glass contained.

“This survey quantified what we have suspected to be true for a while, unit awareness is staggeringly low among this key age group, special offers in supermarkets incite bulk purchasing and one in ten of respondents do not give their liver a day off from alcohol”, the Chief Executive of the British Liver Trust, Alison Rogers.

This latest survey comes on the heels of a report released by the Department of Health which shows that liver-related deaths are on the rise with the number of such deaths in England being above the European average.
