Wearing high-heeled shoes appeared to strengthen ankle muscles at first. But, prolonged use eventually causes an imbalance - a predictor of ankle injury.
Do you love your stilettos? Here’s why you might want to change your habit. A new study has revealed that women who wear 10 cm high heels over three times per week developed an imbalance of four functional ankle muscles. Wearing high-heeled shoes appeared to strengthen ankle muscles at first. However, prolonged use eventually causes an imbalance, which is a crucial predictor of ankle injury.
Dr. Yong-Seok Jee, co-author of the article said, "It was hence clinically important for wearers to regularly perform ankle strengthening exercises, such as heel walking, toe tappers, and heel raises, and to limit the frequency of wearing high-heeled shoes as preventative measures."
The study was published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice.
