Kasturba Hospital, Manipal had announced a free Special Kidney Health Check-up package in connection with World Kidney Day-2007
World Kidney Day falls on March 8. Its objective is to create awareness among the public on two issues viz. the importance of kidneys and ‘kidney disease is common, harmful and treatable.’
Our kidneys do an astounding job of filtering around 180 liters of our blood every day. It also regulates salts in our blood and keeps our body temperature and blood pressure under control. So, for our body to remain healthy, the kidneys have to function effectively.Unfortunately, many are still unaware that Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) is a silent epidemic prevalent all over the world. It includes all conditions that affect our kidneys, thus reducing their functional ability. Kidney diseases lead to other complications like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones and nerve damage.
The early symptoms of CKD include high blood pressure, painful urination, bulge around the eyes, swelling of feet, and a constant feeling of fatigue or lack of energy. Proper diet, intake of fluids and regular exercise keep kidneys healthy.
In India, according to statistics, over one lac peopleare diagnosed with kidney disease every year. About 90 per cent die due to lack of timely treatment. Rendering service to the Indian public and supporting the cause of World Kidney Day, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, has announced a free Special Kidney Health Check-up package in connection with World Kidney Day-2007. The camp is scheduled from March 8 to 16 and includes consultation and urine analysis for random glucose and creatinine.
Dr Ravindra Prabhu, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Nephrology cites Diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure as the two main causes of Chronic Kidney Disease.
Keeping blood sugar and blood pressure under control helps to prevent the disease. Progression of the disease can be halted if detected early. Hence those suffering from diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obese individuals, smokers and all those over 50 years of age should undergo Kidney Health Checks annually.
