Maputo – Trials for the malaria vaccine are underway in Mozambique, certainly not a farfetched goal of realizing the malaria vaccine in the market by 2010.

Maputo – Trials for the malaria vaccine are underway in Mozambique, certainly not a farfetched goal of realizing the malaria vaccine in the market by 2010. The production of the vaccine is estimated at about $60-million.

The country's deputy health minister, Aida Libombo, while addressing a gathering of health officials said 'We think the first malaria vaccine will be available by 2010 if the tests in Manhica (north of the capital Maputo) are effective. We hope that the future vaccine will benefit the local population and be affordable.'

The vaccine would indeed be a blessing to the estimated 4 million Mozambicans who battle with malaria every year on an average, with mortality rate being one out of 10. Nearly six million dollars are spent every year by Mozambique to combat malaria.
