Young People Prefer Celeb Magazines, Internet Blogs to Classic Novels

Gone are the days when youngsters would immerse themselves into a classic novel, for the youth today is more likely to while away their time reading celeb magazines, song lyrics or internet blogs.

The finding is based on a survey that asked more than 1,340 youngsters between the age of 11 to 14 what they liked to read.

The answer: Magazines followed by online song lyrics, computer game cheats, and blogs.

The only book that youngsters like to read it seems is JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, which came in fifth on the list.

Apart from the Potter series, it turns out the youth also enjoy reading books like Anne Frank's Diary and The Lion,// the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis.

As to what they hate to read, well homework closely followed by Shakespeare.

The survey also found that 45 per cent of youngsters had been told that their reading choice was "not proper" by an adult.

A spokesman for Scotland's biggest teaching union, the EIS, described the finding as extremely positive as it showed that youngsters were choosing to read for enjoyment in their own time.

"All reading is valuable and helps young people to improve their level of literacy, their vocabulary and their knowledge. There must also be a recognition that other forms of reading - online, magazines, newspapers etc - also bring many educational benefits," the Scotsman quoted him, as saying.

A Scottish Government spokeswoman added: "Reading shouldn't be hard work, which is why it's right that young people should read things they find interesting and entertaining - and while they're doing so, they're improving their literacy ability."

The findings were compiled by compiled by the National Year of Reading and online teen community Piczo.
