Obesity may be the cause of migraines and severe headaches. In a study that had measured the influence of body mass index on frequency, and severity of headaches, the results had shown that chronic daily headaches are more common in obese people than those with normal body weight.

The researchers had taken the physical history of the participants by telephonic interviews and had divided the number of people into five groups according to their body mass index. 67% of the respondents were female and the average age of the people who participated in the study was 43 yrs.

Obese people reported having at least one attack of severely crippling headache that makes them unable to do anything else. This frequency and severity of the headaches were less for people who are only overweight and least for people who have a normal body weight. For the people who are underweight, there were more cases of headaches accompanied by nausea.

The researchers of Albert Einstein College of Medicine did the study and had presented the results in the American Academy of Neurology 57th Annual Meeting.
