Now, you can also create artistic photographs from your mobile phone which could then be shared with friends on a social network focused on photos - thanks to a new application called Instagram. Launched in October 2010, Instagram is an iPhone app that makes it easy to add effects to photos and share them with friends.
It added a social element to a trend that was already well developed: adding pre-determined effects and filters to mobile phone photographs.
Part of the reason that these apps have caught on is simplicity. Mobile phone cameras often lack the features of a dedicated camera and the photos taken on them are often hurried snapshots.
A filter can improve an otherwise underwhelming image. However, these effects have also become aesthetically desirable in their own right.
"The idea was to make mobile photography fast, beautiful and fun. We learned from experience that taking photos on the phone didn't lead to the results that we wanted, so we created the filters and tools to achieve a more artistic experience," the Telegraph quoted Kevin Systrom, one of the founders of Instagram, as saying.
"That being said, we also wanted to share those photos with friends and we felt that existing social networks were optimised around other mediums. So we went out and created a new social network focused on photos of what you are doing," Systrom stated.
