These remedies can take care of mild cases of snoring. However, individuals who experience sleep apnea or snoring due to other health conditions may require medical interventions. Some snoring aids are as follows:

Continuous positive air pressure (CPAP): This pressurized mask is used to treat sleep apnea and snoring. Individuals wear the mask while sleeping. The mask is connected to a pump, which pumps in air forcing it through the airways. The mask is effective in eliminating snoring, however certain individuals experience the discomfort of wearing a mask. Individuals need to get used to the pumping sound as well. Nasal pillows or a humidifier may reduce the discomfort of the individuals who use the CPAP mask.

Oral cavity devices: Devices that fit into the mouth to push the palate and bring the tongue forward are effective to prevent snoring. When the tongue and palate are pushed forward, the air passage is opened preventing air vibrations with the tissue of the nasal passage. In such cases, individuals need to see their dentist every 6 months in the first year after the implant. After the first year, the patient should get the device checked once every year to avoid issues such as jaw pain, dryness of mouth, and discomfort to the face.

Surgery: Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is performed either by traditional surgery or by laser surgery. In traditional surgery, the excess tissues of the throat are trimmed and tightened. The surgery is performed with general anesthesia. Laser surgery is an outpatient surgery (laser-assisted uvulopalatopharyngoplasty - LAUPPP). A laser beam is used to shorten the uvula or the palate, thus opening up the nasal passages. However, individuals undergoing traditional or laser surgery may be affected by infection, pain, and congestion of the nose. Laser surgery has not been proved to cure sleep apnea and hence is not recommended.

Implants in the palate: The pillar procedure involves inserting braided polyester strands into the palate to stiffen the palate. This opens up the nasal passage and reduces snoring. Currently, there are no known side effects; however, the procedure continues to be analyzed for safety and other benefits.

Tissue removal by radiofrequency (Somnoplasty): This procedure implements the same principle as laser frequency. A radiofrequency signal of low intensity is used to shrink tissue of the soft palate. This tightens the tissue and reduces vibrations and snoring. This is a new procedure and is being analyzed for benefits and possible side effects.
