The exact cause of myofascial pain syndrome is unknown. It may arise due to the mechanical stress on a muscle resulting in the formation of trigger points. Various factors that could result in the formation of trigger points include-
- Trauma or injury to muscles
- Genetic factors resulting in skeletal anomalies such as having different sizes of feet, toes or legs, spine curvature anomalies or some metabolic dysfunctions
- The presence of inflammatory conditions
- Excessive exercise or lack of exercise
- Prolonged poor posture
- Nutritional deficiencies including vitamin deficiency
- Sleep disturbances, stress and anxiety, generalized fatigue
- Hormonal changes
- Obesity
- Frequent exposure to cold weather
