Itsenko-Cushing syndrome, hyperadrenocorticism, and hypercorticism.

What is Cushing's Syndrome ?  

Cushing’s syndrome is a hormonal disorder, occurs due to the presence of abnormally high levels of hormone called cortisol in our body. The hormone Cortisol is also called Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).


Cause(s) :  
  • Taking Glucocorticosteroid medicine in high level
  • Hormones
  • Tumor or adenoma in the pituitary gland produces large amounts of ACTH.
Symptoms :  
  • Weight gain, characterized by fat pads along the collarbone, back of the neck
  • Thinning of skin as it stretches due to weight gain, causing hemorrhage
  • Proximal muscle weakness
  • Depression, moodiness, memory and attention disturbances
  • Osteoporosis
  • Immune suppression
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Hypertension
  • Menstrual Problems
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Excess sweating
  • Excessive hair growth on all over body
  • Impotence in men and reduced libido in women
  • Polyuria and polydipsia
  • Persistent hypertension
Diagnosis and Tests :  
    Laboratory tests include:
  • Blood cortisol level
  • Test urine for cortisol and Creatinine
  • Abdominal CT
  • MRI (pituitary)
