Mitral valve, one of the 4 valves of the heart, opens and closes to control blood flow between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. It comprises of two flaps or “leaflets”. In Mitral valve prolapse, the flaps become thick, resulting in uneven closure of the valve during each heartbeat. Due to uneven closure, the valve bulges back (prolapse) into the left atrium causing a small amount of blood to leak through and move back from ventricle to atrium.
