Hamman-rich syndrome is an uncommon type of pneumonia. But, unlike pneumonia, it is a long-term condition that affects the connective tissue of the lungs. White blood cells and plasma get accumulated in the alveoli, with the inflammation sometimes extending to bronchioles.
The inflammation, over a period of time causes the fluid to harden into scar tissue, called fibrosis. The alveoli are then destroyed and these spaces are filled with cysts. The bronchi and its walls widen and the lungs shrink in size.
