Glossary

Abscess: A confined pocket of pus that collects in tissues, organs or spaces inside the body. It is characterized by pain, redness and swelling.

Anoscope: It is a small, rigid, tubular instrument, also called an anal speculum, which is inserted a few inches into the anus in order to evaluate problems of the anal canal.

Fissure: A fissure is a small, oval-shaped tear in the skin that lines the anal opening. It causes severe pain and bleeding with bowel movements and can be confused with hemorrhoids.

Fistula: It is an abnormal infected narrow tunnel or tract between the epithelial covering of the anal canal and the perianal skin.

Proctoscope: It is an instrument with an integrated light for examining the anus and lower part of the rectum or carrying out minor medical procedures.

Pruritus: Severe itching of the skin, as a symptom of various disease conditions.

Sigmoidoscope: It is an instrument used to see inside the sigmoid colon and rectum. The sigmoid colon is the area of the large intestine nearest to the rectum.

Sitz bath: A bath in which only the buttocks and hips are immersed in water.

Thrombosis: It is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, causing obstruction of blood flow through the circulatory system.
