How do you Prepare Before Brow Lift?
- The brow lift cosmetic procedure is best performed in an accredited hospital or surgical clinic
- Before a brow lift procedure a complete medical history is taken and your current general health and medical condition is evaluated
- You may be asked to carry out laboratory tests such as complete blood count (CBC), blood glucose, bleeding time (BT) and clotting time (CT)
- You may be advised to avoid taking aspirin or other medications which increase bruising and bleeding
- Avoid smoking and alcohol
- Trimming of hair may be advised if the hair is very long or may be a hindrance during surgery
- Arrange for a family member or friend to be with you following surgery and also drive you home after surgery
How is it Performed?
The brow lift is an outpatient procedure performed mostly under general anesthesia (GA). Depending on the level of sagginess of your eyebrows, the most suitable technique is determined preoperatively.
A brow lift is performed by any of the three cosmetic procedures: an endoscopic brow lift, a coronal hairline brow lift or a temporal brow lift.
What Happens During the Brow Lift?
- During brow lift, you will be given either GA or intravenous sedation.
- Incisions are made depending on the surgical procedure most suited to your condition.
- In an endoscopic brow lift a thin tube with a camera is inserted through small incisions made in the hairline. This allows the surgeon to adjust the tissue and muscle below the skin to lift the eyebrows and remove the creases in the forehead. The incisions are usually closed with special clips, removable or absorbable stitches or staples.
- In the traditional coronal brow lifting technique, an incision is made behind the anterior hair line from ear to ear. The forehead skin is lifted, excess tissue is removed and the muscles are tightened. The eyebrows are lifted and also reshaped. Stitches or staples are used to close the incisions in a special manner so that there is minimal scarring. The resulting scar can be hidden with a bangs hairstyle.
- In the lateral temporal brow lift, a two to three inch incision is created within the hair bearing scalp in the upper temple area on either side. The excess tissue and fat below the skin is adjusted to lift the eyebrows and skin in an upward and outward direction.
What Happens After Brow Lift?
Following the surgery you may experience:
- A certain amount of swelling and bruising on the forehead, cheek and area around the eyes. You will be advised to use a cold compress and keep your head elevated to reduce the swelling on the face
- Numbness
- Itching
- The bandages and sutures are usually removed eight to ten days following surgery
- The recovery time is usually two weeks but in certain cases your surgeon may advise you to avoid strenuous activities for a longer period
- It is very important to follow your surgeon's instructions on how to take care of the incisions and how frequently to change the bandages. The effect of the cosmetic procedure is usually noticeable after two weeks following the surgery.
