Causes of Varicocele
The erect posture of man contributes to the etiology of varicocele. The excess backpressure on the veins of the body leads to problems like varicocele, piles and varicose veins of the scrotum.
Varicoceles are formed due to excess back pressure on the veins draining the scrotum. Thus bilateral varicoceles are not uncommon. Sometimes the excess pressure may be formed due to a tumor of the kidney of the same side as the testicular vein joins the renal vein. This cause has to be kept in mind when a varicocele appears in older men beyond the age of forty.
Like varicocele there are other areas in the body where veins can become tortuous and prominent and include the lower limbs (where it is called varicose veins of legs) or sometimes they may appear around the tube that carries food to the stomach (esophagus) and are called ‘esophageal varicosity.’ This is common with advanced stages of the cirrhosis of the liver.
