Travelers to countries with poor sanitation are at greater risk of contracting the disease. Personal care and hygiene and avoiding foods like salads, peeled fruit and ice cream will lessen chances of contracting this infection.
Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated food and water. Out breaks are often reported in some areas in India; however, the Indian government takes swift action and effectively prevents the spread of the disease. Epidemic control and preventive measures are ensured in susceptible areas. For the traveler, exercising caution while eating and drinking will help keep the infection at bay. Also, it maybe mentioned here that after the WHO declaration in 1973, India does not require proof of cholera vaccination as a condition for entry.
